Always looking for new experiments in film photography, I recently took an opportunity to shoot something I never did before : a french rock-band recording its first EP.

Four friends asked me to spend a day in the recording studio as their band, Baron X & The Von Bastards started its journey to fame. ;)

I mostly shoot street-photography so I was really interested in this proposition. But I was also a little stressed regarding the constraints :

  • The studio is a small room, underground with no window and only two little lights.
  • I had to document the session but couldn’t shot during the tracks recording, the sound of my camera would have been heard on the EP.

To have enough angle in the small studio, I needed to use a 35 mm lens. But all I have for now is a 35–70 lens that can only be open at f5.6. Even with a 1600 ISO film, it wouldn’t have been enough I needed a flash.

I bought a Nikon SB-28 Dx cobra flash for the occasion. And, to add more challenge, I didn’t have the time to try it before while I never shot with a flash.

So here are few of the pics I took during this particular day.

Setup :

  • Nikon FM2N at 1/125
  • 35/70 lens at f11
  • SB-28 Dx cobra flash
  • Kodak Portra 400 film

And if you want to listen to Baron X & The Von Bastards :
